An uncoated 50mm focal length like the original Lensbaby. Each lens comes with an Optic Swap Tool that doubles as a cap to the carrying case.
This tool is used to pop the installed lens out and lock the new one in. Using Waterhouse stops provides plenty of potential to experiment with making your own set of lens apertures, using shapes like starts, hearts and other geometrical forms.
The results of our tests are shown in the graph below. Three key factors can be derived from this graph. In contrast, the Composer yielded figures of and We suspect this is largely a result of the increased depth of field, which makes progressively longer sections of the test target appear sharp.
Interestingly, lateral chromatic aberration was consistently low or negligible for all our Imatest assessments on the Composer. When we searched there were 1, images to view. Buy this lens if : — You love experimenting with special effects.

Fear not, everything you need to know is explained here. With a couple of exceptions, each Lensbaby lens or optic can produce one of those effects. A few of them can produce more than one effect — but more on that later. All Lensbaby lenses are manual focus, but they can be broadly divided into two types, standalone and optic-swap. Most Lensbaby standalone lenses look like many other manual focus lenses and have a high-quality metal barrel with a focus ring.
Without the optic in position, the barrel is a hollow tube and the optics cannot be mounted on a camera without a barrel or housing. The optics are also smaller than a standalone lens, so if you want to be able to create more than one effect or shoot at different focal lengths, the optics swap system takes up less room in your bag.
Most of the lenses also produce an image circle that covers a full-frame sensor, but they can be used on smaller format APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras. However, because the Swirl effect is created around the edges of the frame, the Twist and Burnside lenses are not recommended for Micro Four Thirds cameras as the effect is largely cropped from the image.
However, the Trio 28 is an unusual standalone lens that is specifically designed for use with cameras that have smaller sensors. The first decision that you need to make when purchasing or selecting a Lensbaby, is what type of effect do you want, Sweet, Edge, Velvet or Swirl. In some cases the type of effect that you want to create dictates the type of Lensbaby that you need.
The Velvet effect, for example can only be created by standalone lenses, the Velvet 28, Velvet 56, Velvet 85 and Trio Conversely, the Edge effect is only possible with an optic swap kit using one of the Edge optics, the Edge 35, Edge 50 and Edge The Sweet effect is only possible with the Trio standalone lens or the optic-swap system with a Sweet 35, Sweet 50 or Sweet 80 optic.
The Swirl or Twist effect is created by the Twist 60 optic, which often comes with its own straight barrel, or the Trio 20 and Burnside 35 standalone lenses. As well as being manual focus, Lensbaby lenses have no electrical contacts so your camera cannot set the aperture. Most but not all of the Lensbaby lens names give a clue to the effect they create as well as their full-frame focal length.
The Velvet 56, for example, is a 56mm lens that creates the Velvet effect and the Edge 35 is a 35mm optic that creates the Edge effect. The Trio 28 is a 28mm lens that enables 3 effects to be created. You should select the focal length of a Lensbaby in the same way that you would any other lens. Remember to bear in mind the focal length multiplication factor of smaller format sensors, 1.
Follow the link to read about s ensor size and focal length magnification. And if you want to go for optic-swap, what sort of housing do you want? The Lensbaby Spark 2. As the barrel bends, the plane of focus moves around the frame to create more interesting images with distorted background highlights and blur.
As you might guess, the Twist 60 optic creates a Swirl effect around the edges of the image frame. The Sweet effect is a circular area of sharp focus with blur around it. Shooting at a wide aperture creates a stronger effect.
As the lens housing is bent, the bokeh, or out of focus areas, in the image distort and stretch. This 28mm lens is specifically designed for use on smaller format cameras. On an APS-C model it produces images comparable with a lens with a focal length of around 28mm on a full-frame camera.
On a Micro Four Thirds camera, the focal length is equivalent to 56mm. It can also be used on full-frame cameras with a crop setting. This attractively-priced 45mm lens is like a blend of the Composer Pro II and a standalone lens. Its optics cannot be exchanged, but the lens barrel has some tilting movement so that you can move the sweet spot of focus around the frame.
Read our Lensbaby Sol 45 review. The Edge effect is a slice or band of sharp focus with blur either side.
